A Story With No Winners

Saving Death Row Dogs Director-Charged In Killing of PoodleJanet S. Price is the director of the non-profit group Saving Death Row Dogs and is being charged in Municipal Court because she is linked to the killing of a teacup poodle by a German shepherd dog belonging to her organization during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March.

In response to an open records request made by The Topeka Capital-Journal, on Friday the city, provided a copy of a Topeka Municipal Court order requiring Price to appear at a hearing July 17 on a charge of violating the city’s “dangerous dogs” ordinance.

According to the order Price will be asked to enter a plea at the hearing, which won’t be a trial, and that a trial date will then be set if she pleads “not guilty.”

According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, “Witnesses said a male German shepherd dog was walking in the parade with Saving Death Row Dogs, a Topeka-based no-kill rescue and foster group, when it bit and killed an 11-year-old, 3.5-pound, male teacup poodle named Toby, owned by Curtiss Chase. Both dogs were on leashes when the attack occurred at S.W. 10th and Jackson, where Chase said he and his family had been watching the parade with Toby.”

The city’s dangerous dogs ordinance has a rule that states that “if a dangerous or vicious dog kills or wounds, or attempts to kill or wound, any domestic animal, the owner upon conviction must pay a $250 fine and authorities are empowered to impound the dog, which shall be destroyed.”

Records indicate that Price is represented in the case by attorney Tom Lemon.

The Municipal Court order says that if Price misses any court appearances, the animal or animals involved “will be released to Helping Hands Humane Society for adoption or euthanasia.”
