10 Delicious Thanksgiving Treats Your Poodle Shouldn’t Eat
Everyone loves to “spoil” their furbabies at Thanksgiving, in fact all through the holiday season. If you want to “spoil” them and you also want them to have a happy holiday here are 10 “treats” you will NOT share with them this Thanksgiving!
1. Turkey - Most of our Thanksgiving turkeys will be basted with a number of yummy herbs and spices, some of which are bad for our poodle’s tummy. Keep in mind that the fatty skin and added butter aren’t good for our furkids either. As with all of these foods, make sure they are out of reach when you are out of sight of them. 1A. Turkeys Bones - Cooked Turkey bones are NOT a good chew toy for your poodle. Turkey bones are brittle can cause a choking hazards that easily splinter if chewed and can cause stomach lacerations!
2. Sausage and other spiced meats - Sausage is more than meat, it also contains onions, garlic, and a bunch of other tasty herbs and spices, like sage or dill; none of which are good for our pups. They contain sulphites!
3. Dressing or stuffing - Almost everyone love this Thanksgiving staple but it’s a “no-no” for our furkids because it often contains onions, which poison a dogs’ blood cells and mushrooms because some varieties can cause shock death.
4. Fruit Salad - Many fruits are dangerous for dogs like plums, peaches, or grapes (that includes raisins) They could cause kidney failure. It’s a best practice not to feed dogs fruit with seeds or pits.
5. Pumpkin or Sweet Potato Pie - This is not as clear cut as some of the others because both pumpkin and sweet potatoes are fine for dogs in small amounts. The problem is that during the holidays most people add cinnamon and/or nutmeg to their pumpkin or sweet potato dishes. These harsh spices are hard on our dogs.
6. Garlic Bread - As far as your poodle is concerned, garlic is a member of the onion family, so it too is bad for their blood. Almost all bread has yeast, which is not good because it breeds bacteria in puppy’s tummy.
7. Pecan or Any Nut Pie - Pecans, walnuts and macadamia nuts can cause muscle spasms, nervous system damage and weakness of the legs for up to 48 hours.
8. Chocolates and sweets with artificial sweeteners - It’s well known that chocolate acts as a stimulant on dogs, causing elevated heart rate, muscle tremors and seizures. Artificial sweeteners causes dangerously low levels of blood sugar, causing seizures, vomiting, liver failure and coma.
9. Ice Cream - This Thanksgiving, NO milk products, this means no ice cream or whip cream. After weaning almost all dogs become lactose intolerant and it will cause diarrhea. That should be deturant enough for most of us- just saying!
10. Alcohol - This one should go with out saying! It doesn’t matter whether wine, beer, or hard alcohol, it’s simply not good for dogs. Not only is the alcohol itself toxic but so are the grapes and hops. Serve alcohol to your dog and you could kill them.
